James W. Ross

James W. Ross, born on September 6, 1938, is a distinguished Canadian businessman and former senator. Appointed directly by the Queen on the advice of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Ross was part of a unique group of eight senators who were brought in to ensure the passage of the Goods and Services Tax. This strategic move was necessary due to the Liberal-dominated Senate, which posed a significant challenge to the legislation.

With a background in business, Ross served in the Senate for a brief period of nine hundred seventy-two days before resigning in May 1993. Despite being eligible to serve for an additional twenty years, he chose to return to public life at the age of fifty-five. His tenure was marked by his representation of the Maritimes, alongside fellow senator Michael Forrestall, rather than a specific province.

Beyond his political career, Ross has remained an active figure in Fredericton, New Brunswick, contributing to the community as a philanthropist and businessman. In nineteen ninety-four, he founded Partners For Youth Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people through adventure-based counseling and community partnerships.

In recognition of his contributions to Canada, Ross was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in nineteen ninety-nine, highlighting his commitment to public service and community development.
