James Wolfensohn, born on December first, nineteen thirty-three, in Sydney, Australia, was a distinguished lawyer, investment banker, and economist. He is best known for his role as the ninth president of the World Bank Group from nineteen ninety-five to two thousand five. During his presidency, he championed poverty alleviation and redefined development financing, earning the title of banker to the world's poor.

Wolfensohn's influence extended beyond the World Bank. He played a pivotal role in rescuing Chrysler Corporation from near bankruptcy and significantly improved the financial health of prominent cultural institutions in the United States, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. His leadership at the World Bank was marked by two terms, appointed by U.S. President Bill Clinton, after which he engaged with various charitable organizations and policy think-tanks, notably the Brookings Institution.

A graduate of the University of Sydney and Harvard Business School, Wolfensohn was also an accomplished Olympic fencer. He worked for several companies in both Britain and the United States before establishing his own investment firm. In nineteen eighty, he became an American citizen, renouncing his Australian citizenship, although he later regained it in two thousand ten.
