Jamie Raskin, born on December thirteenth, nineteen sixty-two, is a prominent American attorney, law professor, and politician. He has been serving as the U.S. representative for Maryland's eighth congressional district since two thousand seventeen. A progressive member of the Democratic Party, Raskin previously held a seat in the Maryland State Senate from two thousand seven to two thousand sixteen, where he made significant contributions to state legislation.
Raskin's congressional district, which underwent redistricting in two thousand twenty-two, now primarily covers much of Montgomery County and a small portion of Prince George's County. This area, located northwest of Washington, D.C., includes both suburban and rural communities, reflecting Raskin's commitment to representing diverse constituents.
In addition to his legislative duties, Raskin co-chairs the Congressional Freethought Caucus, advocating for secular governance and the separation of church and state. He gained national prominence as the lead impeachment manager during the second impeachment of President Donald Trump, a pivotal moment in American political history following the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Before his tenure in Congress, Raskin was a constitutional law professor at American University Washington College of Law. There, he co-founded and directed the LL.M. program on law and government and played a key role in establishing the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, which aims to educate young people about their constitutional rights.
