Jan Baudouin de Courtenay

Jan Niecisław Ignacy Baudouin de Courtenay, born on March thirteenth, eighteen forty-five, was a distinguished Polish linguist and Slavist. His contributions to the field of linguistics are particularly noted for his groundbreaking theory of the phoneme and the study of phonetic alternations, which have had a lasting impact on the discipline.

Throughout his illustrious career, Baudouin de Courtenay held academic positions at several prestigious Imperial Russian universities. He began his teaching journey at Kazan from eighteen seventy-four to eighteen eighty-three, followed by a tenure at Dorpat, now known as Estonia, from eighteen eighty-three to eighteen ninety-three. His academic pursuits continued in Kraków from eighteen ninety-three to eighteen ninety-nine, during the time when the city was part of Austria-Hungary.

In the early twentieth century, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he taught from eighteen hundred to nineteen eighteen. After the tumultuous years of World War I, he returned to academia in nineteen nineteen, becoming a professor at the re-established University of Warsaw in the newly independent Poland, where he continued to influence the field until his passing on November third, nineteen twenty-nine.
