Jan Garbarek, born on March 4, 1947, in Mysen, Østfold, is a distinguished Norwegian jazz saxophonist renowned for his contributions to both jazz and classical music, as well as world music. His unique sound and innovative approach have made him a prominent figure in the music industry.
Growing up in Oslo as the only child of Czesław Garbarek, a former Polish prisoner of war, and Kari Nordbø, a Norwegian, Jan experienced a unique childhood. He remained stateless until the age of seven due to the lack of automatic citizenship grants in Norway during that period.
At the age of twenty-one, Jan married the accomplished author Vigdis Garbarek, further intertwining his life with the arts. He is also the proud father of Anja Garbarek, who has followed in her father's footsteps as a musician and composer.
