Jan Johnson

Jan Johnson, born on November 11, 1950, in Hammond, Indiana, was a distinguished American pole vaulter who left an indelible mark on the sport. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1972, where he set a school record in the pole vault at an impressive eighteen feet and half an inch (5.499 m). His athletic prowess was evident early on, as he also excelled in long jump and sprinting during his high school and college years.

Johnson's competitive spirit shone brightly on the international stage when he represented the United States at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, where he earned a bronze medal. Prior to this, he had already made waves in the pole vaulting community by holding a world indoor record of seventeen feet and seven inches (5.36 m) while competing for the University of Kansas. His remarkable achievements included being a three-time NCAA champion and winning the 1971 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
