Jan Karol Chodkiewicz

Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, born in 1560, was a distinguished military commander and statesperson in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. He rose to prominence as the Field Hetman of Lithuania in 1601 and later became the Grand Hetman of Lithuania in 1605. His leadership and strategic prowess made him one of the most notable noblemen of his time.

Chodkiewicz played a pivotal role in several significant military campaigns, including the Wallachian campaign from 1599 to 1601, the Polish–Swedish War between 1600 and 1611, the Polish–Muscovite War from 1605 to 1618, and the Polish–Ottoman War during the years 1620 to 1621. His most celebrated achievement came during the Battle of Kircholm in 1605, where he led a smaller force to a stunning victory against a Swedish army that was three times larger.

Tragically, Chodkiewicz's life was cut short during the battle of Khotyn, where he died on the front lines in the besieged Khotyn Fortress. His death occurred just days before the Ottoman forces agreed to negotiate an end to the siege, marking a significant moment in the military history of the region.
