Jan Vertonghen, born on April 24, 1987, is a distinguished Belgian former professional footballer renowned for his defensive prowess. Primarily a centre-back, he also showcased his versatility by playing as a left-back throughout his career. Vertonghen's journey in professional football began at Ajax in 2006, where he made a significant impact, amassing two hundred and twenty appearances and scoring twenty-eight goals across all competitions. His leadership qualities shone through as he captained the team from 2011 to 2012, leading Ajax to two Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cup victories. In recognition of his exceptional performance, he was honored as the Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2012.
In July 2012, Vertonghen made a pivotal move to Tottenham Hotspur, where he quickly established himself as a key player. His debut season in the Premier League was remarkable, earning him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year. Over the course of eight years with Spurs, he made three hundred and fifteen appearances and played a crucial role in the team's journey to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.
