Jane Campion

Jane Campion, born on April 30, 1954, is a distinguished New Zealand filmmaker celebrated for her compelling narratives that often explore themes of rebellion and the complexities of women's experiences in society. Her unique storytelling has positioned her as a leading figure in women's cinema, where she has consistently placed women in prominent roles as outsiders.

Making her directorial debut with the film Sweetie, Campion quickly garnered attention for her distinctive voice in cinema. She continued to build her reputation with notable works such as An Angel at My Table (1990), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), Holy Smoke! (1998), and Bright Star (2009). However, it is her critically acclaimed films The Piano (1993) and The Power of the Dog (2021) that have solidified her status as a master filmmaker, earning her two Academy Awards.

In addition to her film work, Campion co-created the acclaimed television series Top of the Lake (2013), which further showcased her talent and earned her multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Her contributions to the film industry have been recognized with numerous accolades, including two BAFTA Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Palme d'Or awards, among others.

In recognition of her significant impact on cinema, Campion was appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DNZM) in the 2016 New Year Honours, highlighting her dedication and service to the film industry.
