Jane Colden

Jane Colden, born on March twenty-seventh, seventeen twenty-four, stands as a pioneering figure in American botany. Recognized by Asa Gray in eighteen forty-three as the 'first botanist of her sex in her country,' Colden's contributions to the field were significant, even if they went largely unacknowledged in her time. Her correspondence with notable botanists, including John Ellis and Carl Linnaeus, showcased her application of the Linnaean system to the diverse flora of America.

Despite the lack of recognition in contemporary botanical literature, Colden's work was respected by prominent figures such as John Bartram, Peter Collinson, and Alexander Garden. Her dedication to botany is encapsulated in her untitled manuscript, which is preserved in the British Museum. This remarkable document details the flora of the Hudson Valley in the Newburgh region of New York state and features intricate ink drawings of three hundred forty different species.
