Janet Mills, born on December 30, 1947, is a distinguished American lawyer and politician who has made significant strides in Maine's political landscape. Since January 2, 2019, she has proudly served as the 75th governor of Maine, marking a historic milestone as the state's first female governor. Her journey in public service began in the Maine House of Representatives, where she represented the towns of Farmington and Industry.
Mills' legal career is equally impressive, having served as Maine's Attorney General for four nonconsecutive terms from two thousand nine to two thousand eleven and again from two thousand thirteen to two thousand nineteen. She was the first woman to hold this esteemed position, having been elected by the Maine Legislature on January 6, 2009, succeeding G. Steven Rowe. Her second term commenced on January 3, 2013, following William Schneider's tenure.
In the 2018 gubernatorial election, Mills was nominated by her party and emerged victorious against Republican Shawn Moody and independent Terry Hayes. Her leadership and commitment to the state were recognized once again when she was reelected in 2022. As she continues her governorship, Mills has set her sights on the future, launching her campaign for the 2026 United States Senate election in Maine on October 14, 2025, seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge five-term incumbent Republican Susan Collins.
