Raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Yellen graduated from Brown University in nineteen sixty-seven and earned her Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in nineteen seventy-one. Her academic journey began as an assistant professor at Harvard University, followed by a role as a staff economist for the Federal Reserve Board. She later became a faculty member at the London School of Economics before joining the University of California, Berkeley, where she has been a prominent figure since nineteen eighty.

Yellen's extensive experience includes serving on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from nineteen ninety-four to nineteen ninety-seven, after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. She was appointed chair of the Council of Economic Advisers from nineteen ninety-seven to nineteen ninety-nine. Following a return to academia, she led the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco as president and CEO from two thousand four to two thousand ten, before being appointed vice chair of the Federal Reserve by President Barack Obama.
