Javier Milei

Javier Milei, born on October 22, 1970, in Buenos Aires, is a prominent Argentine economist and politician who has made significant waves in the political landscape of Argentina. He has served as the 59th president of Argentina since 2023, following a successful career as a national deputy representing the City of Buenos Aires for the party La Libertad Avanza from 2021 until his presidential election.

Educated at the University of Belgrano, Milei earned a degree in economics and later obtained master's degrees from the Institute of Social and Economic Development and Torcuato di Tella University. His academic journey led him to become a professor of macroeconomics, and he gained public attention in the 2010s as a vocal critic of the Argentine political establishment through various television appearances.

In the 2021 legislative elections, Milei was elected to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies, where he focused on critiquing the political elite and advocating for fiscal responsibility. He famously pledged not to raise taxes and donated his salary through a monthly raffle. His presidential campaign in 2023 culminated in a victory over the incumbent economy minister, Sergio Massa, as he positioned himself against the Kirchnerist policies that he blamed for Argentina's monetary crisis.

As president, Milei has prioritized stabilizing Argentina's economy, implementing substantial spending cuts, deregulation, and monetary restraint. His administration has seen a decrease in poverty levels to an estimated thirty-one point six percent and a fiscal surplus for the first time since two thousand eight.
