Jay Rock

Johnny Reed McKinzie Jr., known professionally as Jay Rock, was born on March 31, 1985, in Southern California. He began his musical journey by signing with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2005, a pivotal moment that set the stage for his future in the rap industry. In 2008, he released his debut single, "All My Life (In the Ghetto)," featuring Lil Wayne and will.i.am, through a major label joint venture with Warner Bros. Records and Asylum Records. Despite the initial excitement, the single did not chart, leading to a departure from the labels shortly thereafter.

After a series of ten mixtapes with TDE, Jay Rock's long-awaited debut studio album, "Follow Me Home," was finally released in 2011. The album received moderate commercial success and critical acclaim, bolstered by tracks like "Hood Gone Love It," featuring Kendrick Lamar. In 2014, he parted ways with Strange Music, where he had signed in 2011, and continued to evolve his sound.

In 2015, Jay Rock released his second album, "90059," which further solidified his place in the hip-hop landscape. His third album, "Redemption," released in 2018 under a joint venture with Interscope Records, was met with widespread critical acclaim, peaking at number thirteen on the Billboard 200. The lead single, "King's Dead," featuring Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake, not only charted at number twenty-one on the Billboard Hot 100 but also won Best Rap Performance at the sixty-first Annual Grammy Awards.

Beyond his solo endeavors, Jay Rock is recognized as a key member of the now-defunct hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy, alongside fellow TDE artists Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul. His contributions to the genre and collaborations with other artists have made him a significant figure in contemporary hip-hop.
