Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, known to the world as Jay Sean, is a British singer-songwriter born on March 26, 1981. He first made waves in the UK's Asian Underground scene as a member of the Rishi Rich Project, where his debut single 'Dance with You' climbed to No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart in 2003. This early success paved the way for his signing with Virgin Records, leading to two top ten hits in 2004: 'Eyes on You' at No. 6 and 'Stolen' at No. 4. These tracks were part of his debut album, 'Me Against Myself', which, while moderately successful in the UK, achieved remarkable sales of over two million copies across Asia, solidifying its status as his most successful album to date.
In 2006, Jay Sean parted ways with Virgin Records to establish his own label, Jayded Records. After a brief hiatus, he returned to the music scene in 2008 with the single 'Ride It', which peaked at number 11 on the UK singles chart. This was followed by hits like 'Maybe', which reached number 7 on the Japan Hot 100, and 'Tonight'. All three tracks were featured on his second album, 'My Own Way', which not only peaked at number 6 in the UK Albums Chart but also topped the UK R&B Chart, showcasing his evolution into incorporating electropop elements into his R&B sound.
From 2008 to 2014, Jay Sean was signed to Cash Money Records, where he achieved monumental success with his 2009 single 'Down', featuring Lil Wayne. This track made history by topping the Billboard Hot 100, marking him as the first solo artist of South Asian descent and the first UK urban act to achieve this feat. 'Down' became the seventh-best selling song of 2009 in the United States, with sales exceeding three million copies that year, ultimately reaching six million, making him the most successful British/European male urban artist in US chart history at that time.
His follow-up hit, 'Do You Remember', featuring Lil Jon and Sean Paul, also enjoyed significant success, selling over a million copies in the US and entering the top ten on the Hot 100. These tracks were part of his American debut album, 'All or Nothing', which debuted at No. 37 on the US Billboard 200 and reached No. 11 on the Japan Oricon Albums Chart. Jay Sean has also collaborated with various artists, including Australian singer Jessica Mauboy on 'What Happened to Us', which charted in the top 20 on the ARIA singles chart and was certified platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association.
