Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo

Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo, born on June thirtieth, nineteen forty-two, is a notable figure in Burkina Faso's political landscape. He received his early education in Upper Volta before joining the Upper Voltan Army, where he later pursued medical studies abroad. His career in healthcare led him to become the chief medical officer of the Ouagadougou military camp.

In November nineteen eighty-two, Ouédraogo played a pivotal role in a coup d'état, which resulted in him assuming the presidency shortly thereafter. His governance was marked by a moderate ideological stance compared to his contemporaries, yet he struggled to garner significant popular support amidst a turbulent political environment. Advocating for private ownership of businesses, he faced a protracted dispute with Prime Minister Thomas Sankara.

This conflict culminated in his removal from power in August nineteen eighty-three, followed by a period of imprisonment. After his release in nineteen eighty-five, Ouédraogo returned to the medical field, opening a clinic in Somgandé in nineteen ninety-two, which he continues to operate today.

In the 2010s, Ouédraogo transitioned into a role as a mediator, facilitating dialogue between opposing political factions in Burkina Faso, showcasing his enduring commitment to the nation's political stability.
