Jean-Baptiste Tavernier

Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, born in 1605, was a remarkable French explorer and gem merchant whose adventurous spirit led him on six significant voyages to Persia and India between 1630 and 1668. Traveling at his own expense, he covered an astonishing sixty thousand leagues, immersing himself in the cultures and treasures of the East.

In 1675, at the request of his patron, Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, Tavernier published his renowned work, Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier. This book not only chronicled his travels but also showcased his keen observations and insights as a cultural anthropologist. It quickly became a bestseller, translated into several languages, including German, Dutch, Italian, and English, and remains a valuable resource for scholars today.

Tavernier is perhaps best remembered for his acquisition of the illustrious 116-carat Tavernier Blue diamond in 1666, which he sold to Louis XIV in 1668 for the staggering sum of one hundred twenty thousand livres, equivalent to one hundred seventy-two thousand ounces of pure gold, along with a letter of ennoblement.

In 1669, Tavernier further solidified his status by purchasing the Seigneury of Aubonne in the Duchy of Savoy for sixty thousand livres, thereby becoming the Baron of Aubonne. His legacy as a merchant, writer, and explorer continues to captivate those interested in the rich tapestry of 17th-century history.
