Jean Bartik

Jean Bartik, born on December twenty-seventh, nineteen twenty-four, was a pioneering American computer programmer and mathematician. She was one of the original six programmers of the ENIAC computer, a groundbreaking machine that laid the foundation for modern computing. Bartik's journey began at the University of Pennsylvania, where she initially calculated ballistics trajectories manually before transitioning to the ENIAC, where she and her colleagues developed many of the fundamental principles of programming.

Alongside fellow programmers Betty Holberton, Ruth Teitelbaum, Kathleen Antonelli, Marlyn Meltzer, and Frances Spence, Bartik played a crucial role in codifying programming techniques that are still relevant today. The ENIAC was the first computer of its kind, and their work on it was instrumental in shaping the future of technology.

After her significant contributions to the ENIAC, Bartik continued her career by working on the BINAC and UNIVAC projects. She held various roles in technical companies, including writer, manager, engineer, and programmer. In her later years, she transitioned to a career as a real estate agent. Jean Bartik passed away in two thousand eleven due to complications from congestive heart failure.

In recognition of her contributions to the field of computing, the default theme of the content-management framework Drupal is named Bartik, honoring her legacy and impact on technology.
