Jean Tatlock

Jean Tatlock, born on February twenty-first, nineteen fourteen, was an influential American psychiatrist known for her complex life and relationships. The daughter of John Strong Perry Tatlock, a distinguished philologist specializing in Geoffrey Chaucer, she pursued her education at Vassar College before earning her medical degree from Stanford Medical School, where she trained to become a psychiatrist.

During her time at Stanford, Tatlock became romantically involved with J. Robert Oppenheimer, a prominent physicist and the director of the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II. Their relationship began in nineteen thirty-six, marking a significant chapter in both their lives. However, her affiliation with the Communist Party USA and her connection to Oppenheimer led to her being placed under FBI surveillance, including phone tapping.

Despite her professional accomplishments, Tatlock faced personal struggles, including clinical depression. Tragically, her life came to an end on January fourth, nineteen forty-four, when she died by suicide. Her legacy remains intertwined with the historical narratives of her time, reflecting the challenges faced by individuals caught in the political and social upheavals of the era.
