Jeanne Ashworth, born on July 1, 1938, in Burlington, Vermont, was a pioneering American speed skater who made her mark in the world of winter sports. Competing in the 1960, 1964, and 1968 Winter Olympics, she was part of history as she participated in the inaugural Olympic speed skating event for women.
During her illustrious career, Ashworth showcased her exceptional talent by winning eleven national championships throughout the late 1950s and 1960s. Her most notable achievement came at the 1960 Winter Olympics, where she earned a bronze medal, finishing behind competitors from Germany and Russia.
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Ashworth lived near Lake Placid, where she ran a family-owned toy and candy company, contributing to her community. Sadly, she passed away from pancreatic cancer on October 4, 2018, in Wilmington, New York, leaving behind a legacy of determination and excellence in speed skating.
