Jeanne Crépeau

Jeanne Crépeau, a talented Canadian film director and screenwriter, hails from Montreal, Quebec. She is best known for her poignant film, Julie and Me (Revoir Julie), which showcases her unique storytelling abilities.

Her journey in filmmaking began with training at the National Film Board of Canada and the Canadian Film Centre, where she honed her craft. In the 1980s and early 1990s, she created several short films, including the notable Justine's Film (Le film de Justine), which garnered critical acclaim at the 1989 Toronto International Film Festival, receiving an honourable mention from the Best Canadian Short Film award jury. The film also triumphed at the 1990 Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival, winning awards for Best Experimental Film, Best Director, and Best Musical Score.

In 1991, Crépeau collaborated with the dance troupe Brouhaha Danse to create Claire, a video and performance tribute to dancer Claire Samson, who tragically lost her life in 1990. This project highlighted her ability to blend different art forms and pay homage to significant cultural figures.

Initially, Crépeau envisioned her debut feature film to revolve around an Olympic swimmer. However, after facing challenges in securing funding, she found inspiration during a visit to a friend in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This led her to rewrite the script and utilize her friend's house as the film's set. The result was Revoir Julie, released in 1998, which won the Audience Award at the Paris Lesbian Film Festival in 1999, further establishing her reputation in the film industry.
