Jeanne Renaud

Jeanne Renaud, born on August twenty-seventh, nineteen twenty-eight, in Montreal, is a celebrated Canadian dancer and choreographer, recognized as a pioneer of modern dance in Quebec. Her artistic journey began at the École de musique Vincent-d'Indy, where she studied music, before she honed her dance skills in classical ballet under Elizabeth Leese and modern dance with Gérald Crevier.

Renaud's quest for knowledge led her to New York City, where she trained with renowned figures such as Merce Cunningham, Hanya Holm, and Mary Anthony. In nineteen forty-eight, she showcased her talent in a recital alongside Françoise Sullivan in Montreal. Her teaching career took her to Paris from nineteen forty-nine to nineteen fifty-four, where she further expanded her artistic horizons.

In nineteen fifty-two, Renaud collaborated with Les Automatistes, a group of artists who had relocated to Paris, to present a performance at the American Club. Her association with Françoise Riopelle at the École de Danse Moderne de Montréal from nineteen fifty-nine to nineteen sixty-five saw her excel as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer. In nineteen sixty-six, she founded Le Groupe de la Place Royale, Quebec's first official modern dance company, serving as dancer, choreographer, artistic director, and administrator until nineteen seventy-two.

After her tenure at Le Groupe, Renaud co-operated Galerie III with Ed Kostiner from nineteen seventy-one to nineteen seventy-five, a venue for contemporary art and performance. She later contributed to the Canada Council and the Quebec Ministère des affaires culturelles, eventually becoming the head of the Conservatoire d'art dramatique du Québec in both Montreal and Quebec City. Renaud's influence extended to academia as she taught at the Université du Québec à Montréal from nineteen eighty-seven until her retirement in nineteen eighty-nine.

Her contributions to the arts have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Prix Denise-Pelletier in nineteen eighty-nine, the Governor General's Award for the Performing Arts in nineteen ninety-five, and her appointment to the Order of Canada in nineteen ninety-eight. Renaud's personal life saw her marry Jean-Pierre Labrecque around nineteen forty-eight, with whom she had a daughter and a son before their separation in the early nineteen seventies. She is also the sister of writer Thérèse Renaud and artist Louise Renaud.
