Tambellini's journey in professional hockey began when he was selected twenty-seventh overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the two thousand three NHL entry draft. He made his NHL debut in two thousand five, but his rookie season saw him traded to the New York Islanders. Over the next three years, he adeptly balanced his time between the NHL and the American Hockey League, playing for the Manchester Monarchs and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Before his professional career, Tambellini showcased his talent in junior hockey, earning MVP honors in the British Columbia Hockey League. He led the Chilliwack Chiefs to victory, securing both the Fred Page Cup and the Doyle Cup.
