Jeffrey Chiesa, born on June 22, 1965, is a prominent American lawyer and politician known for his significant contributions to New Jersey's legal and political landscape. He served as the United States senator from New Jersey for a brief but impactful period from June 6 to October 30, 2013, following the death of Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg.
A member of the Republican Party, Chiesa's career in public service began when he was appointed as the 59th attorney general of New Jersey, a role he held from January 10, 2012, until June 6, 2013. His tenure as attorney general was marked by a commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice within the state.
Before his appointment as attorney general, Chiesa served as Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. His close working relationship with Christie paved the way for his subsequent appointment to the U.S. Senate, where he became the first Republican senator from New Jersey since Nicholas F. Brady.
Despite his brief time in the Senate, Chiesa made a notable impact and chose not to run for the remainder of the Senate term in the 2013 special election, which was ultimately won by Democrat Cory Booker, the Mayor of Newark. To this day, Chiesa remains a significant figure in New Jersey politics as the last Republican to serve as a U.S. senator from the state.
