Jehan Alain

Jehan Alain was a remarkable French composer, organist, and choir director, born on February third, nineteen eleven, into a family steeped in musical tradition. His early exposure to music came from his father and various esteemed teachers, which laid the foundation for his prodigious talent. By the age of eighteen, he had already begun composing, a passion that would flourish until the onset of the Second World War a decade later.

Alain's compositional style was notably influenced by the innovative musical language of Claude Debussy, alongside his fascination with the music, dance, and philosophy of the Far East. This eclectic blend of influences allowed him to create a unique sound that resonated with audiences and fellow musicians alike.

As the Second World War erupted, Alain took on the role of a dispatch rider in the Eighth Motorised Armour Division of the French Army. His bravery was evident during the Battle of Saumur, where he tragically lost his life. Despite his short career, his legacy continued through his siblings; his younger brother, Olivier Alain, and sister, Marie-Claire Alain, both of whom played significant roles in popularizing his works.
