Jejomar "Jojo" Cabauatan Binay Sr., born on November 11, 1942, is a prominent Filipino lawyer, politician, and human rights activist. He made history as the 13th vice president of the Philippines, serving from 2010 to 2016 under President Benigno Aquino III. His political journey began when he was appointed as the officer-in-charge mayor of Makati by President Corazon Aquino from 1986 to 1987, marking the start of a long and impactful career in public service.
Following his initial tenure, Binay was appointed as the officer-in-charge governor of Metro Manila from 1987 to 1988. He was later elected as the mayor of Makati in 1988, a position he held for six consecutive terms until 2010. During this period, he also served as the chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority from 1990 to 1991, showcasing his commitment to urban development and governance.
In 2009, Binay announced his candidacy for the vice presidency as the running mate of former president Joseph Estrada. Despite Estrada's loss to Aquino, Binay emerged victorious, securing over forty-one percent of the votes cast. His vice presidency was marked by his roles as chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council and as a presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers. However, he resigned from these positions in June 2015 due to differences with the president and some cabinet members.
After his vice presidential term, Binay sought a senate position in the 2022 general elections but was unsuccessful, receiving over thirteen million votes and finishing thirteenth on the list. His political career reflects a dedication to public service and advocacy for human rights, leaving a significant mark on Philippine politics.
