Jennie Darlington

Jennie Darlington, born in 1924, was a pioneering American explorer, geographer, and aircraft pilot. She made history as one of the first women to overwinter in Antarctica during the winter of nineteen forty-seven to nineteen forty-eight, alongside fellow explorer Jackie Ronne. Their journey began when they re-occupied a former U.S. station on Stonington Island, a site previously visited during the U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition in nineteen thirty-nine.

Darlington's involvement in the expedition was serendipitous; she had initially planned to accompany her husband, Harry Darlington, who was the pilot for the Ronne expedition, only as far as Valparaiso, Chile. However, the couple ended up spending their honeymoon in the icy expanse of Antarctica after Jackie Ronne and her husband invited Jennie to join them.

Notably, Darlington became the first woman to become pregnant in Antarctica, a remarkable feat that added to her legacy. She later co-authored a book titled My Antarctic Honeymoon with Jane McIlvaine, in which she expressed her complex feelings about the continent, stating, "women do not belong in Antarctica." The book features evocative imagery, describing Antarctica as a fickle and unpredictable entity.

Despite their shared experiences, Darlington and Ronne had a strained relationship, which may have stemmed from personal tensions between their spouses. Nevertheless, Jennie Darlington's contributions to exploration and her unique experiences in one of the most remote places on Earth continue to inspire future generations.
