Jennifer Jones

Jennifer Jones, born Phylis Lee Isley on March 2, 1919, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a celebrated American actress and mental-health advocate. Her career, which spanned over five decades, was marked by remarkable achievements, including five Academy Award nominations and a win for Best Actress. Jones first gained recognition for her lead role as Bernadette Soubirous in the acclaimed film The Song of Bernadette in 1943, a performance that also earned her a Golden Globe.

Throughout the mid-1940s, Jones continued to impress audiences and critics alike with her performances in films such as Since You Went Away, Love Letters, and Duel in the Sun, all of which garnered her additional Academy Award nominations. In 1949, she married film producer David O. Selznick and starred in the adaptation of Madame Bovary, further solidifying her status in Hollywood.

The 1950s saw Jones take on diverse roles in films like Ruby Gentry, Beat the Devil, and Terminal Station. Her portrayal of a Eurasian doctor in Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing in 1955 earned her a fifth Academy Award nomination. Following the death of Selznick in 1965, she married industrialist Norton Simon and gradually entered semi-retirement, making her final film appearance in The Towering Inferno in 1974, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In addition to her film career, Jones faced personal challenges, including mental health struggles. The tragic loss of her daughter, Mary Jennifer Selznick, in 1976 propelled her into advocacy for mental health education. In 1980, she founded the Jennifer Jones Simon Foundation for Mental Health and Education. Jones spent her later years in Malibu, California, where she passed away from natural causes on December 17, 2009, at the age of ninety.
