His career spanned over sixteen years, during which he showcased his talents with several teams, most notably the Portland Trail Blazers, where he played from nineteen eighty-four to nineteen ninety-five.

Selected in the second round of the nineteen eighty-four NBA draft from Longwood University, Kersey quickly made a name for himself. He contributed significantly to the Trail Blazers' success, culminating in a memorable stint with the San Antonio Spurs, where he celebrated an NBA Finals victory in nineteen ninety-nine against the New York Knicks.

After retiring from professional play, Kersey transitioned into coaching, taking on the role of assistant coach under his former teammate Terry Porter with the Milwaukee Bucks in two thousand five.
