Jerry Herman

Jerry Herman, born on July 10, 1931, was a celebrated American composer and lyricist renowned for his significant contributions to Broadway theatre. His career took off in the 1960s, during which he became one of the most commercially successful songwriters of his era, crafting musicals that radiated an upbeat and optimistic spirit.

Among his most notable works are the iconic musicals Hello, Dolly! (1964), which once held the record as the longest-running musical in Broadway history, and Mame (1966), a star vehicle for the legendary Angela Lansbury. Herman's ability to create what he termed 'the simple, hummable showtune' resonated with audiences and left a lasting impact on the musical landscape.

In 1983, he made history with La Cage aux Folles, the first hit Broadway musical centered around a gay couple, further showcasing his innovative approach to storytelling through music. His contributions to the theatre were recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre in 2009 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2010.
