Jersey Joe Walcott

Arnold Raymond Cream, known to the world as Jersey Joe Walcott, was born on January 31, 1914. He emerged as a formidable force in the boxing ring, competing professionally from 1930 until 1953. Walcott's career was marked by his remarkable achievement of holding the New York State Athletic Commission, National Boxing Association, and The Ring heavyweight titles from 1951 to 1952. At the age of thirty-seven, he became the oldest man to win the heavyweight title, a record that stood for over four decades until it was surpassed by George Foreman in 1994.

Despite a relatively brief reign as the world heavyweight champion, Walcott was widely regarded as one of the finest heavyweights of the 1940s and 1950s. His skill and tenacity in the ring earned him respect and admiration from fans and fellow boxers alike. After retiring from boxing, he ventured into acting, taking on small roles in various movies and television shows, showcasing his versatility beyond the sport.

Walcott's contributions to boxing did not end with his retirement; he also served as a referee for several matches. However, a controversial ending to the second fight between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston led to his exclusion from future refereeing opportunities. In addition to his boxing career, Walcott made history in public service by becoming the first African-American Sheriff of Camden County, New Jersey, serving from 1971 to 1974. He later held the position of chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission from 1975 to 1984, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.
