Despite his impressive stature, Willard was often recognized more for his size than his boxing prowess. He held the championship for over four years, yet his title defenses were infrequent. In nineteen nineteen, at the age of thirty-seven, he faced a devastating defeat against Jack Dempsey, choosing not to return for the fourth round in what was deemed an overwhelmingly one-sided match.
Following this bout, Willard publicly accused Dempsey of using a device akin to a knuckle duster, a claim that added controversy to their rivalry. Dempsey did not offer Willard a rematch, and at the age of forty-two, Willard was knocked out, leading to his retirement from the sport. Throughout his life, he maintained that Dempsey had cheated during their fight.
