Jim Flaherty

Jim Flaherty, born on December thirtieth, nineteen forty-nine, was a prominent Canadian lawyer and politician. He first entered the political arena in nineteen ninety-five when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. Flaherty served as a Member of Provincial Parliament until two thousand six, holding various Cabinet positions during Premier Mike Harris' administration from nineteen ninety-seven to two thousand two.

In two thousand six, Flaherty transitioned to federal politics, running for the Conservative Party in the federal election. Following the party's victory, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him as the Minister of Finance. During his tenure from two thousand six to two thousand fourteen, Flaherty implemented significant tax reforms, including reductions in personal and corporate income taxes, and lowered the Goods and Services Tax to five percent. He also introduced the tax-free savings account and played a crucial role in navigating the challenges posed by the Great Recession.

Flaherty's fiscal policies were instrumental in eliminating a deficit of fifty-five point six billion dollars in the Canadian federal budget by two thousand fourteen, achieved through substantial spending cuts. He was the longest-serving finance minister in Harper's government, tabling nine federal budgets before his resignation in two thousand fourteen.

Tragically, Jim Flaherty passed away from a heart attack just three weeks after stepping down from his ministerial role. His legacy continues through his widow, Christine Elliott, who later became the Deputy Premier of Ontario.
