Jim Henson

Jim Henson, born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi, was a visionary American puppeteer, actor, animator, and director renowned for creating the beloved Muppets. His journey into the world of puppetry began in high school, and by the time he was a freshman at the University of Maryland, he had already developed his first television program, Sam and Friends, in collaboration with fellow student Jane Nebel.

In 1958, Henson and Nebel co-founded Muppets, Inc., which would later become The Jim Henson Company. Their partnership blossomed into marriage in 1959. Henson graduated with a degree in home economics, but his true passion lay in children's entertainment. He joined the iconic Sesame Street in 1969, where he helped create memorable Muppet characters that would capture the hearts of audiences for generations.

Henson's innovative approach to puppetry transformed the medium, leading to the creation of groundbreaking shows like The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock, as well as films such as The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. His characters, including Kermit the Frog and Rowlf the Dog, became cultural icons, and his work earned him two Emmy Awards for The Storyteller and The Jim Henson Hour.

Tragically, Henson passed away in New York City due to toxic shock syndrome caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. At the time of his death, he was negotiating a sale of his company to The Walt Disney Company, a deal that ultimately fell through. Posthumously, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991 and was named a Disney Legend in 2011, solidifying his legacy as a pioneer in the world of entertainment.
