As of 2023, he holds the esteemed positions of President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics. His remarkable contributions to the comic book industry have earned him several prestigious accolades, including the Harvey Award, Inkpot Award, and three Wizard Fan Awards.

Lee's journey in the comic book realm began in 1987 when he joined Marvel Comics as an artist. He illustrated notable titles such as Alpha Flight and The Punisher War Journal, but it was his work on The Uncanny X-Men that catapulted him to fame. Collaborating with writer Chris Claremont, Lee co-created the beloved character Gambit, leading to the launch of a spinoff series in 1991. The debut issue, X-Men #1, which he penciled and co-wrote, achieved the status of the best-selling comic book of all time, as recognized by Guinness World Records.

In 1992, Lee, along with several fellow artists, founded Image Comics, a publishing company dedicated to creator-owned comics.
