Jim McGreevey, born on August sixth, nineteen fifty-seven, is a notable American politician and lobbyist who made history as the fifty-second governor of New Jersey. His tenure lasted from two thousand two until his resignation in two thousand four, a decision prompted by a highly publicized sex scandal. As a member of the Democratic Party, McGreevey holds the distinction of being the first openly gay individual to serve as a state governor in the United States.
Before ascending to the governorship, McGreevey's political career included serving in the New Jersey General Assembly from nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety-two, and as the nineteenth mayor of Woodbridge Township from nineteen ninety-one to two thousand two. He also held a position in the New Jersey Senate from nineteen ninety-four to nineteen ninety-eight. Although he was the Democratic nominee for governor in nineteen ninety-seven, he was narrowly defeated by the Republican incumbent Christine Todd Whitman. However, he successfully ran for governor again in two thousand one, winning by a significant margin.
During his time in office, McGreevey appointed Golan Cipel, an Israeli national, as a Homeland Security advisor, a decision that drew criticism due to Cipel's lack of qualifications for the role. On August twelfth, two thousand four, amid threats of a sexual harassment lawsuit from Cipel, McGreevey publicly acknowledged his homosexuality and revealed an extramarital relationship, announcing his resignation effective November fifteenth, two thousand four. He later claimed to have had an affair with Cipel, a statement that Cipel denied.
After leaving public office, McGreevey published a memoir titled The Confession in two thousand six. He pursued a path towards ordination in the Episcopal Church, earning a Master of Divinity degree from General Theological Seminary in New York City, although he was ultimately not ordained. He returned to the Catholic Church and in July two thousand thirteen, he was appointed head of Jersey City's Employment & Training Program, a role he held until his termination in two thousand nineteen. Currently, McGreevey serves as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation and was a candidate in the two thousand twenty-five Jersey City mayoral election, where he lost to James Solomon.
