Jim Prentice, born on July 20, 1956, was a prominent Canadian lawyer, politician, and businessperson. He made significant contributions to Canadian politics, serving as the sixteenth premier of Alberta from 2014 to 2015. Prentice's political journey began when he was elected to the House of Commons in the 2004 federal election as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. His dedication to public service saw him re-elected in 2006, leading to his appointment as Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
In 2007, Prentice took on the role of Minister of Industry, and following the 2008 election, he became Minister of Environment. However, on November 4, 2010, he announced his resignation from cabinet and his position as MP for Calgary Centre-North, transitioning into the private sector as vice-chairman of CIBC.
Prentice returned to provincial politics in Alberta, where he successfully ran for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Association in 2014. His victory on September 6, 2014, positioned him as both the party leader and the premier, as the Progressive Conservatives held a majority in the Legislative Assembly. During his tenure, he formed a new cabinet and introduced his first budget in 2015.
Despite his efforts, the 2015 provincial election resulted in an unprecedented defeat for the Progressive Conservatives, marking the end of a forty-four-year reign in Alberta. Although Prentice won re-election in Calgary-Foothills, he resigned as both party leader and MLA on election night, retiring from politics. Tragically, on October 13, 2016, Prentice lost his life in a plane crash near Kelowna, British Columbia, leaving behind a legacy of public service and dedication.
