Jimmy Somerville

Jimmy Somerville, born on June 22, 1961, in Glasgow, Scotland, is a renowned pop singer, songwriter, recording artist, and film director. He first gained prominence in the 1980s as a member of the synth-pop groups Bronski Beat and The Communards. With Bronski Beat, Somerville achieved significant commercial success with the iconic 1984 single 'Smalltown Boy', which peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and topped charts in Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and the US Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Somerville's contribution to Bronski Beat was highlighted in their debut album, 'The Age of Consent', released in 1984. This album marked the only release he contributed to as the lead vocalist before departing the band in 1985. Following the passing of founding members Larry Steinbachek in 2016 and Steve Bronski in 2021, Somerville remains the sole surviving member of Bronski Beat.

In 1986, Somerville joined The Communards, where he continued to showcase his powerful and soulful countertenor voice. Their debut album, 'Communards', featured the internationally acclaimed single 'Don't Leave Me This Way', which reached the top of the charts in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the US Dance Club Songs. This single became the best-selling of 1986 in the UK, further solidifying Somerville's status as a pop icon.

The Communards released their second studio album, 'Red', in 1987, which continued their chart success until the band disbanded in 1988. Following this, Somerville embarked on a successful solo career, further establishing his legacy in the music industry.
