Before his tenure as prime minister, Rusnok made significant contributions to the Czech government as the minister of Finance from two thousand one to two thousand two, and later as the minister of Industry and Trade from two thousand two to two thousand three. His expertise in economic matters paved the way for his later appointments.
On May twenty-fifth, two thousand sixteen, President Miloš Zeman appointed Rusnok as the fourth governor of the Czech National Bank, a role he officially began on July first, two thousand sixteen. He successfully served in this capacity until June thirtieth, two thousand twenty-two, when he was succeeded by Aleš Michl.
