Jyrki Juhani Järvilehto, widely known as JJ Lehto, was born on January thirty-first, nineteen sixty-six, in Espoo, Finland. He embarked on his racing journey at the tender age of eight, starting with competitive kart racing. By nineteen eighty-one, he had transitioned to Formula Ford, where he quickly made a name for himself as a protégé of the legendary Keke Rosberg, the 1982 World Drivers' Champion. Lehto's talent shone brightly as he clinched several national and continental titles, culminating in a dominant performance in the 1988 British Formula Three Championship with Pacific.
Lehto's Formula One career spanned from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety-four, during which he participated in seventy Grands Prix for teams including Onyx, Italia, Sauber, and Benetton. His debut came at the Portuguese Grand Prix in nineteen eighty-nine, and he achieved a notable podium finish at the San Marino Grand Prix in nineteen ninety-one while driving for Italia.
Beyond Formula One, Lehto made significant strides in sportscar racing, securing the American Le Mans Series title in two thousand four. He is celebrated for his remarkable victories at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning in nineteen ninety-five and again in two thousand five, as well as triumphing at the 12 Hours of Sebring in nineteen ninety-nine and two thousand five.
After retiring from competitive racing, Lehto transitioned to a career in broadcasting, serving as a commentator and pundit for MTV3. However, his life took a tragic turn in June two thousand ten when he was involved in a boating incident that resulted in the death of an associate. Initially found guilty of negligent homicide and driving under the influence, Lehto's conviction was later overturned by the Turku Court of Appeal in November two thousand twelve due to inconclusive evidence regarding his role in the incident.
