Joan Jett

Joan Jett, born on September 22, 1958, is an iconic American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress, often hailed as the 'Godmother of Punk'. With a career that spans decades, she has made a significant impact on the rock music landscape, becoming a symbol of empowerment and rebellion.

Jett first gained prominence as a co-founder of the groundbreaking all-girl rock band, the Runaways, from 1975 to 1979, during which they released four albums. After the band's dissolution, she faced numerous rejections from record labels while trying to launch her solo career. Undeterred, she partnered with producer Kenny Laguna to establish her own independent label, Blackheart Records, and released her self-titled debut album in 1980, which later became known as 'Bad Reputation'.

Her breakthrough came with the formation of her backing band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Their 1981 album, 'I Love Rock 'n Roll', reached number two on the US Billboard 200, with the title track soaring to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. This song not only became Jett's signature hit but also earned a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016. The album also featured the successful single 'Crimson and Clover'.

Throughout her career, Jett has released eleven additional albums, with notable successes including 'Album' (1983) and 'Up Your Alley' (1988), both of which received gold and platinum certifications. Her 1988 single 'I Hate Myself for Loving You' marked her third top ten hit on the Hot 100 and garnered her a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance. Jett's influence is further recognized by her inclusion in Rolling Stone's lists of the greatest guitarists of all time in both 2003 and 2023.
