Joan of Kent

Joan of Kent, known as the 'Fair Maid of Kent', was born in 1328 and became a prominent figure in English history. As the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Kent, she inherited the titles of 4th Countess of Kent and 5th Baroness Wake of Liddell following her brother John's death in 1352. Her noble lineage and beauty made her a significant political player in her time.

Joan's marriage to Edward the Black Prince, the eldest son of King Edward III, solidified her status in the royal family. Together, they had a son, Richard II, who would later ascend to the throne of England. Joan's influence extended beyond her familial ties, as she was recognized for her wisdom and charm.

Described by the French chronicler Jean Froissart as the most beautiful woman in England, Joan captured the hearts of many. Chandos Herald further praised her as 'beautiful, pleasant and wise', highlighting her multifaceted appeal. In 1378, she was honored with the title of Lady of the Garter, a testament to her esteemed position in society.
