Joan Sutherland

Joan Sutherland, born on November seventh, nineteen twenty-six, was an iconic Australian dramatic coloratura soprano whose remarkable talent played a pivotal role in the revival of the bel canto repertoire from the late nineteen fifties through the nineteen eighties.

In nineteen sixty-one, Sutherland made history as the first Australian to win a Grammy Award, receiving the accolade for Best Classical Performance – Vocal Soloist (with or without orchestra) in nineteen sixty-two. This achievement marked a significant milestone in her illustrious career.
