João Havelange

João Havelange, born on May 8, 1916, was a multifaceted Brazilian figure known for his contributions as a lawyer, businessman, and athlete. His remarkable journey in the world of sports culminated in his role as the seventh president of FIFA, a position he held from 1974 to 1998. This tenure marked the second longest in FIFA's history, following that of Jules Rimet.

Havelange's influence extended beyond FIFA; he was also a member of the International Olympic Committee from 1963 until 2011, making him the longest-serving active member at the time of his resignation. His leadership in these prestigious organizations shaped the landscape of international sports.

Despite his accolades, Havelange's legacy was marred by controversy. A Swiss prosecutor's report in July 2012 revealed that he and his son-in-law, Ricardo Teixeira, had accepted bribes totaling more than forty-one million Swiss francs in connection with World Cup marketing rights during his time on FIFA's Executive Committee.

Upon leaving office, Havelange was honored with the title of honorary president. However, he resigned in April 2013, leaving behind a complex legacy that intertwines significant achievements with serious allegations.
