Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of João Sousa

João Pedro Coelho Marinho de Sousa, born on March 30, 1989, is a distinguished former professional tennis player from Portugal. Known for his remarkable achievements on the court, Sousa reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 28 on May 16, 2016, and a doubles ranking of No. 26 on May 13, 2019. His nickname, Conquistador, reflects his roots in Guimarães, the birthplace of Afonso I, Portugal's first king.

Beginning his tennis journey at the age of seven, Sousa quickly made a name for himself by winning national youth titles. At fifteen, he made a pivotal decision to move to Barcelona to further his career. After a modest junior career, he turned professional in 2008, claiming his first singles title in 2009. Sousa's ascent in the ATP Challenger Tour began in 2008, culminating in his first tournament victory at this level in 2011.

His breakthrough came in 2013 at the Malaysian Open, where he became the first Portuguese player to win a World Tour-level singles tournament. This victory propelled him into the top 50, making him the first Portuguese player to achieve this milestone. Sousa continued to break records, reaching a career-best ranking of World No. 33 in November 2015 and entering the top 30 for the first time in May 2016.

Throughout his career, Sousa consistently ranked in the world's top 100 from July 2013 to March 2021, securing four ATP Tour singles titles. He was the first Portuguese player to compete exclusively on the ATP World Tour in a single season and the first to be seeded in a Grand Slam tournament at the 2014 US Open. His legacy includes being the Portuguese player with the largest career prize money and the most wins at Grand Slam singles tournaments, solidifying his status as one of the greatest tennis players in Portugal's history.
