Jody Gage, born on November twenty-ninth, nineteen fifty-nine, is a distinguished Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger. He was selected in the third round, forty-fifth overall, by the Detroit Red Wings during the nineteen seventy-nine NHL Entry Draft. Gage's career spanned a decade, during which he became a legendary figure in the American Hockey League (AHL), particularly known for his remarkable tenure with the Rochester Americans.
Throughout his time with the Americans, Gage set numerous franchise records, becoming the all-time leader in games played with six hundred fifty-three, points with seven hundred twenty-eight, goals with three hundred fifty-one, and assists with three hundred seventy-seven. His exceptional performance in the nineteen eighty-seven to eighty-eight season earned him the prestigious Les Cunningham Award after scoring sixty goals, making him only the second player in league history to achieve such a feat.
Gage's contributions to the AHL were monumental; he was the third player in league history to reach one thousand points and the fifth to play one thousand games. Additionally, he was a proud member of the AHL's five hundred-goal club. His leadership on the ice was instrumental in leading the Rochester Americans to a Calder Cup victory in nineteen eighty-six to eighty-seven and subsequent appearances in the Calder Cup Finals in nineteen eighty-nine to ninety, nineteen ninety to ninety-one, and nineteen ninety-two to ninety-three.
Dubbed "Mr. Amerk," Gage concluded his AHL career during the nineteen ninety-five to ninety-six season, finishing with five hundred four goals, one thousand forty-eight points, seven seasons with forty or more goals, and fifty-one playoff goals. In his brief NHL career, he played sixty-eight games with the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres, accumulating fourteen goals, fifteen assists, and twenty-six penalty minutes. Following his retirement, Gage transitioned to a role as assistant general manager, where he played a pivotal role in helping the Amerks secure the nineteen ninety-five to ninety-six Calder Cup championship against the defending champion Portland Pirates.
