Joe Calzaghe

Joe Calzaghe, born on March 23, 1972, is a distinguished British former professional boxer who made his mark in the ring from 1993 to 2008. Renowned for his exceptional skills, Calzaghe held multiple world championships across two weight classes, including the prestigious unified and lineal titles at super-middleweight, as well as the Ring magazine light-heavyweight title.

Calzaghe's legacy is highlighted by his remarkable tenure as the longest reigning super middleweight world champion in boxing history. He held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title for over a decade, successfully defending it against twenty opponents—a record he shares with Sven Ottke. His reign at super-middleweight and light-heavyweight overlapped, allowing him to retire with the longest continuous time as a world champion among active boxers at that time.

In a groundbreaking achievement, Calzaghe became the first boxer to unify three of the four major world titles—the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, and WBO—at super-middleweight. He was also the inaugural Ring champion in this weight class. Between 2006 and 2008, he was consistently ranked among the world's top ten active boxers, achieving a peak ranking of third in January 2009.

Calzaghe retired in February 2009 with an impressive undefeated record of forty-six wins, still holding the title of world champion. As of December 2024, BoxRec recognizes him as the thirty-seventh greatest fighter of all time, pound for pound, and the second-greatest European boxer ever.
