Joe D'Amato

Joe D'Amato, born on December fifteenth, nineteen thirty-six, is a multifaceted figure in the film industry, renowned for his contributions as a director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, editor, and actor. His career began in the 1950s, where he honed his skills as an electric and set photographer, transitioning to a camera operator in the 1960s. By nineteen sixty-nine, he had established himself as a cinematographer, a role he would frequently reprise throughout his career.

From nineteen seventy-two onwards, D'Amato embarked on an ambitious journey, directing and co-directing approximately two hundred films under various pseudonyms. His versatility allowed him to regularly take on the role of cinematographer, showcasing his comprehensive understanding of film production. In the early 1980s, he expanded his influence by producing numerous genre films, founding or co-founding several production companies, with Filmirage being the most notable.

D'Amato's legacy is particularly marked by his work in the horror and erotic film genres. He is best known for his five entries in the Black Emanuelle series, featuring Laura Gemser from nineteen seventy-six to nineteen seventy-eight. His horror/pornography crossover films, such as Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Porno Holocaust, both shot in Santo Domingo in nineteen seventy-nine, further solidified his reputation. In the horror genre, films like Beyond the Darkness and Antropophagus, released in nineteen seventy-nine and nineteen eighty respectively, have achieved cult status, alongside his work on Absurd in nineteen eighty-one.
