Joseph Allen Maldonado, known to the world as Joe Exotic, was born on March 5, 1963, in Kansas. His early life saw a significant move to Texas, where he eventually dropped out of Pilot Point High School. Exotic's career began in law enforcement, serving briefly as the chief of police in Eastvale before venturing into the world of exotic animals.
In 1997, following the tragic death of his brother, Exotic sold their pet store and established the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma, which he operated from 1999 until 2018. During his time at the G.W. Zoo, he became a multifaceted entertainer, hosting magic shows, cub-petting events, and an online talk show. His ambition to create a reality television series about his life was thwarted when a fire destroyed much of the footage in 2015.
Exotic's notoriety grew when he ran as an independent candidate in the 2016 presidential election, captivating the public with his eccentric persona. However, his life took a dark turn in 2018 when he was arrested for allegedly hiring two men to murder Carole Baskin, his rival in the animal rights community. In 2019, he was convicted on multiple charges, including animal abuse and attempted murder for hire, leading to a twenty-two-year prison sentence.
In 2021, Exotic sought a new trial, and a U.S. appeals court later reduced his sentence to twenty-one years. Despite his legal troubles, he announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election as a Democrat in 2023. Exotic's life has been the subject of significant media attention, including the hit Netflix series Tiger King, which highlighted his tumultuous career and rivalry with Baskin.
Throughout his journey, Joe Exotic has faced substantial criticism regarding his treatment of animals and his controversial public persona. His story continues to resonate, inspiring documentaries and even a dramatized series, Joe vs. Carole, which aired in March 2022.
