Joe Masseria, born on January seventeenth, eighteen eighty-six, was a prominent Italian-American crime boss who played a pivotal role in the New York City Mafia. He led what is now recognized as the Genovese crime family, one of the Five Families that dominate organized crime in the city, from nineteen twenty-two until nineteen thirty-one.
During his reign, Masseria was embroiled in the fierce Castellammarese War, a brutal conflict for control over the lucrative criminal enterprises in New York City. This power struggle was marked by violence and betrayal, as rival factions vied for supremacy in the underworld.
The war ultimately culminated in Masseria's assassination on April fifteenth, nineteen thirty-one. His murder was orchestrated by his own lieutenant, Charles 'Lucky' Luciano, who conspired with Salvatore Maranzano, the head of a rival faction, to eliminate Masseria and reshape the landscape of organized crime in New York.
